Murderous Memories
It was incredibly difficult, even after the passing of nearly three decades for Mary to dredge up some memories again. They were painful, more so now that she was a mother herself and the enormity of her crimes sunk in.
The void she had created in the life of each person who knew and loved Martin and Brian was one that could never be filled. There were no magic words. âSorryâ was not good enough. It did not even begin to fill the chasm of loss that the passage of time seemed to etch even deeper.
It took 28 years for Mary to be able to admit out loud and to herself what had taken place the day Martin Brown died. They were words that would just not come, no matter how hard she tried. Wringing her hands and staring down at them as if they were something foreign she had just discovered mysteriously attached to herself, she gulped deep breaths of air as smoke from a forgotten cigarette swirled around her head. She never could bring herself to use the word âchoked.â She could admit what happened that day, but not use that word.
There were many things that led to the events of May 25, 1968. Mary was obviously an angry child. The final straw seems to have occurred when her mother sent her to the store and she came back with the wrong item. She had thought Betty wanted her to bring home a broom but when she did, Betty proceeded to beat her with it. Mary became so enraged that she grabbed the other end of the broomstick and, punching her mother in the stomach, yelled, âYou whore!â Racing down the stairs and outside, adrenaline coursing through her system, she ran as hard and as fast as she could, realizing this was the first time she had ever called her mother a name or fought back.
Maryâs hurt and anger needed an outlet. She had no one she could discuss things with and no one who could help her find a healthy way to vent her anger and frustration. It looked as if the victim was about to become the predator.
It seems almost understandable then when she saw young Martin. A victim of circumstances. A victim of chance on that day in particular, having been pushed to her breaking point, Martin became the first murder victim of Mary Flora Bell.
When she was finally able to start discussing what happened to Martin she said when she arrived at the house, he was already there. Curious herself to explore this forbidden abandoned house, she told Martin to go home. He refused, telling her that he didnât have to go home. She kept telling him to go home, go home, go home, as if she almost knew that if he did not listen, she was going to do something really terrible.
She noticed a broken stairway and to this day doesn't know why she decided to go up the steps. She grabbed Martin by the hand and dragged him along behind her.
